Olin College Teams Excel in Recent Engineering Competitions

Olin's Phoenix Racing team, Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team, and Sailbot team recently competed in three separate engineering events. Each placed highly in its respective competition.

Olin's Phoenix Racing team competing in 2012 Baja SAE East, made the trip to Auburn University's National Center for Asphalt Technology in Opelika, Ala., in April to compete against eighty-six teams from all over the country. The thirty-member squad traveled to Alabama with their off-road, mini-baja vehicle in the back of a truck. With its sleek design and exceptional endurance, the vehicle led Olin's Baja SAE team to success in the Hill Climb (44th place), Suspension (29th place), Land Maneuverability (29th place), Acceleration (43rd place), and Endurance (50th place) individual competitions. Overall, the team placed 44th in the 2012 competition.

Olin's Phoenix Racing team is sponsored by Boeing, National Instruments, BOSE, Autodesk, Barrett Technology, MacDiarmid, MOM South and Mortgage Capital; as well as The Patterson Family, Andrew Tsang '09, Michael Siripong '07, The Andree Family, The Gutcher Family, The Martelaro Family, The Raymond Family and The McMullen Family.

The Olin College Human Powered Vehicle team recently competed in ASME's Human Powered Vehicle Competition East ([ASME HPVC) at Grove Street College in Grove City, Pa., taking home the 2012 Knovel Award for Design Innovation, a third place finish and placing in the top five in every event.

The team won the 2012 Knovel? Award for Design Innovation for their ingenious rider variation compensation system, which allowed for quick and easy height adjustments between tall and short riders. Olin placed third overall out of thirty-two teams; and placed third in the Design Event, third in the Women's Speed Event, fifth in the Men's Speed Event and second in the Endurance Event. Even though Olin's HPV team may not have duplicated last year's first place standing, it did create a great deal of buzz across the Internet for a crash that can be seen here.

"I love the Olin HPV team because it allows me to gain experience in mechanical engineering projects outside of courses," said Jackie Rose, a co-leader of Olin's team. "I also really enjoy building a vehicle for a competition, because it gives us a high goal to strive towards. Also, the team itself is an excellent group of people, and I love working with all of the people on it.

This year's sponsors included Kazak, who gave the Olin HPV team a large amount of carbon fiber cloth; CD-adapco, who granted the team licenses for simulations software; Landry's Bicycles for various bicycle parts; the Olin Student Academic Grant Committee; and alumni Eamon Doyle, Casey Canfield, Jacob Izraelevitz, David Stamp, and Jacob West. The faculty advisor was Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Aaron Hoover.

A team with far less experience in competition, Olin's Sailbot team, was founded just this year by James Regulinski '12, Jaime McCandless '12, Jason Curtis '12, Andrew Fabian '12, and Abe Feldman '12. It didn't take long, however, for the team to enter their project into competition. The robotic sailing team recently made its way to Vancouver, B.C., for the 6th International Robotic Sailboat Championship, despite having to disassemble and reassemble its boat for the lengthy trip.

With the help of an impressive performance in the Navigation Contest, Olin College and its Sailbot, named 'Blackbody Radiation,' were able to claim second place out of nine teams from all over the United States and Canada. Six events took place and each event was scored on a ten point scale. Olin College placed fourth and second in the two fleet races, second in the Station Keep fashion jackets ing event, first (three way tie) in the Navigation event, second in the presentation event, and second in the Long Distance event.

"I participate in Sailbot because it's fun, it's exciting, and I'm pushing the boundaries of what I know how to do," said team member Eric Schneider. "The team did great at the IRSC in Vancouver, taking 2nd place by just a few points in its rookie year. We are really excited to expand and further define the mission of the team this year -- we don't want to be defined by the IRSC -- our goal for the end of 2012 -- but instead use it explicitly as a stepping stone, an intermediate waypoint on the way to an advanced, useful robotic platform propelled by the wind."

The team's rookie year became even better, as team representatives Jaime McCandless and Jason Curtis, along with faculty members Drew Bennett and Dave Barrett, were selected to give a keynote presentation about Sailbot at National Instruments Week 2012 (NI Week August 6-9 2012). National Instruments has arranged to ship out Olin's competition boat for show and is even assembling a demo of the Olin Sailbot Team's small R/C test platform. The presentation will be eight minutes long and will draw an audience of 4,500 engineers.

The Olin College Sailbot Team was sponsored by Olin College, National Instruments, CustomMade.com, and Olin's HPV and Baja clubs. The faculty advisor is Drew Bennett, but the team also has garnered much assistance from faculty members Scott Harris, Garland O'Connell, and Dave Barrett.

Financial Press: Respect Your Universe set to Trade in Canada

Respect Your Universe, Inc., a premium performance apparel and equipment company, is poised to begin trading in Canada on Friday on the TSX Venture Exchange. - (Financial Press)

RYU designs and manufactures athletic clothing for mixed martial arts, and has been listed in the US since last April. The company has witnessed tremendous growth since then and credits this to their close ties to the sport.

"RYU is a great brand with awesome gear and good people that offer top notch support for fighters like me," said Jamie Varner, a popular Lightweight MMA fighter.

RYU provides men's and women's products, and we will focus on the wholesale market in Canada, along with MMA specialty shops and online to international customers.

"We understand that per capita Mixed Martial Arts is more popular in Canada than the USA," said RYU Chairman, Kristian Andresen. "Obviously we have seen the success lululemon athletica has achieved starting in Vancouver and want to capitalize on consumers that share those sensibilities."

Lululemon's stock currently trades around $58, down significantly from an all-time high of $80 in May.

RYU has 23 retail partners globally – not including the company's website RYU.com.

"Online is available to all of Canada," said Andresen. "L2 in Vancouver, KTB MMA in Surrey, and Hype Fight Shop in Calgary, are currently offering the products, and we have other accounts pending."

Cross-fit is another booming area where the company will be expanding into.

"RYU is the brand inspired by training technologies, and philosophy," said Andresen. "RYU believes that a positive presence in relation to Martial Arts is what people are gravitating towards. Martial Arts isn't about tattoos, skulls getting smashed and intimidation to RYU it's about being disciplined, the traditions, honor and of course respect for one's opponent."

The appeal of the RYU brand has already inspired confidence among investors. Last week RYU announced the completion of a public offering of shares of common stock.

"We are extremely pleased to have announced the closing of the offering," said Andresen. "We look forward to our listing on the TSXV, and believe it is a step in the continued success of our growing brand."

In the offering, RYU sold a total of 5,882,500 shares at a price of $0.85 per share for total gross proceeds of $5,000,125. The shares will trade on the TSXV on August 10, under the symb women's coats online ol "RYU".

Salman Partners Inc. acted as placement agent for the offering. Salman Partners Inc. is an independent, research-driven investment dealer. Since 2010, Salman Partners has participated in $423 million new equity.

RYU expects to continue their staggering growth in what remains a very tough market. With so much achieved to date, what challenges lie ahead for RYU?

"Being a new brand is challenging but we see we are winning people over every day," said Andresen. "RYU will continue to be successful with consumers as it delivers quality products that people can feel good about and feel good wearing."

Founded on the principles of respect, strength, honor and sustainability, and influenced by the dedication of the athlete to the ancient sport of Martial Arts, RYU's innovative premium apparel and product for both performance and lifestyle was created to inspire all athletes to achieve greatness.

But that's not all that's different about RYU.

By producing products that are environmentally, and ethically, sound, all of RYU's apparel and products are comprised of up to 90% organic and recycled materials utilizing some of the best yarn and fabric suppliers in the world.

Through the creation of innovative apparel and products that have less of an impact on the environment, RYU's fabrics and technologies boast the attributes of Moisture Control Fabric (AIR Weave), Thermal Control Fabric (FIRE Weave), Weather Resistant Fabric (WIND Weave) and Eco-Friendly Fabric (TERRA Weave). RYU's authenticity in its apparel and products is also reflected in the design of each item containing one or more symbols from ancient Samurai iconography.

Efforts like these have been supported by smart marketing initiatives. For instance, RYU is an official sponsor of the UFC and will be visible in various elements throughout the UFC events in 2012 including logo displays and live announcements during bouts along with television promotions and placement on the UFC website including their web store.

So what else is new?

RYU released their Men's Fall 2012 Collection and new Women's Fall 2012 Line last month so that Martial Arts enthusiasts who train at the House of RYU athletic facility in Las Vegas will also be able to wear RYU's premium performance apparel and gear specifically designed to enhance their overall performance.

RYU plans to open new retail stores in the ne ar future, and with the release of the Men's 2012 Fall Collection and unveiling of the new Women's 2012 Fall Line, RYU retail locations have 120 styles available from both the Men's and Women's Fall Lines in the store for customers including apparel and accessories.

To help luxury lovers stay informed on the latest in upscale style and Hollywood happenings, Rodeo Drive Resale (http://www.shopRDR.com), premier reseller of 100% authentic guaranteed handbags and fashions including top designer pieces such as discount Chanel purses, Christian Dior wallets and Louis Vuitton clothing, highlights the latest in celebrity and designer fashion news.

1)    FASHION DESIGNER STRIPPED OF AWARD: Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano, who once served as a designer for Givenchy and later artistic director for Christian Dior, was recently stripped of an award. On August 27, France's leading Jewish group announced that Galliano had lost the right to wear the French Legion of Honour medal. This is just the latest blow to the designer's legacy following a Paris Courts' decision which found him guilty of making anti-Semitic remarks in 2011. "What he said made him unworthy of wearing this decoration," The Associated Press quoted Richard Prasquier, president of the Jewish group CRIF, as saying on August 27. "There are some convictions that aren't compatible with the award." Last February, footage of Gallioano shouting anti-Semitic remarks toward a group of women landed online, which led to suspended fines and his termination from Christian Dior.

2)    THE NEW VINTAGE: The French fashion house founded by style visionary Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel has unveiled its autumn/winter 2012/13 haute couture collection, which gives a nod to the 'New Vintage' movement, offering a refreshing edge to classic silhouette designs. "I wanted a modern elegance, casual," Chanel fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld said in a July 2012 story posted by The Toronto Sun. Next month, Chanel's Little Black Jacket exhibition will his UK shores, an event slated to commemorate the release of The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, a collection of photos taken by Lagerfield that capture celebs and models sporting the iconic jacket.

3)    OPERATION TAKEOVER: The self-appointed "Louis Vuitton Don" better known as rapper Kanye West often raps about his affinity for luxury fashion and style. But during a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, West's girlfriend, reality television star Kim Kardashian, learned just how seriously he takes decadence after telling her to empty her entire closet in order to make room for an new wardrobe. While some might see the move as a bit controlling, Kim revealed she is lear women's coats online ning a lot from the Grammy-Award winning musician. "Kanye has definitely inspired me to wanna, like, be a little bit more of an individual," she said, adding that the closet cleaning was as much a shock to her as viewers at home. "It's so ironic that I'm the one that's always giving my friends their closet makeovers so for the roles to be reversed it's like 'Oh My God."

Rare Opportunity for Breast Cancer Survivor to Win a Complete Turnkey Ecommerce Business from Pure-Ecommerce.com

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Pure-Ecommerce.com is giving a breast cancer survivor the opportunity to own their own turnkey internet business. Founder and CEO Jennifer Varner, who is a three-year breast cancer survivor, "hopes to show others fighting this disease that life does go on after cancer and great things can be in store for them!"

Now through October 31, 2012, Pure-Ecommerce.com is holding its Second Annual Survive & Thrive Business Giveaway. Breast cancer survivors are invited to enter the giveaway for a chance to win http://www.stylishteeshirts.com, one of Varner's turnkey ecommerce business-in-a-box solutions plus 40 hours of full consulting and mentoring. They may do so by visiting Pure-Ecommerce's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pure-Ecommerce/151056601629813) and clicking on the Survive & Thrive sweepstakes icon. The drawing will take place on November 1, 2012. The winner will be notified and will also be listed on http://www.pure-ecommerce.com, http://www.JenniferVarner.com, and Pure-Ecommerce's Facebook page.

Surviving and thriving is something Varner knows a great deal about. Her husband, Jeff, was diagnosed with cancer just three weeks after their wedding. At only 29 years old, they were told by the doctors that Jeff had only a slim chance at life and that they would never have children. The Varners were devastated...but also determined. Miraculously while Jeff was undergoing treatment, Jennifer discovered she was pregnant. The young couple beat the cancer and soon thereafter welcomed their first child.

Three years ago, Varner found out she herself had invasive breast cancer after celebrating the 10th year of her husband being free from colon cancer. At the time she was three months pregnant and her greatest fear was for the health of her unborn child. She chose to fight the cancer. This meant undergoing a mastectomy and enduring chemotherapy treatments all while being pregnant. Her husband Jeff became a role model and her unborn child provided her the strength to withstand the arduous treatments. Fortunately, the baby was born healthy, and they are all grateful to be alive. The Varner's named their son Kilian which means small and mighty.

Jennifer feels so lucky and wants to give back as much as she can. After going through breast cancer, she started a non-profit organization called Kilian's Kids, named after her son Kilian who survived chemotherapy along with her. That organization gives laptops and tablets to kids going through cancer.

"Today my husband is cancer free! Today I am cancer free! Most importantly, my baby, Kilian, is perfect! He is a survivor too; he took that long hard journey with me. Through these events I have gained so much knowledge, wisdom and strength - more than I ever had, and more then I knew I could gain in a lifetime. I live every moment, every day like it's my last. But I know it's not, I plan on having an amazing future. I have overcome and thrived."

Now it's Varner's desire through the 2nd Annual Survive and Thrive Business Giveaway to give back to another breast cancer survivor who has overcome. "I want to empower a woman and give her hope as she moves on and recovers from this life changing disease. Most of all I want to give her the vision to look towards to a future that can be bright and full of possibilities."

What Are The Real Rainforest Facts?

We all know a few facts about rainforests from Tarzan movies; for instance, in the rainforest you will find lush green vegetation, exotic animals, restless natives, and usually a few white men up to no good. But beyond those stereotypes, what are the real rainforest facts? What is the status of the world's rainforests, and why is it important to preserve them?

Here's the first rainforest fact: Rainforests are the oldest ecosystems on earth - they have been evolving for 70-100 million years.

The largest rainforest in the world is the Amazonrainforest in South America, which covers an area about two-thirds the size of the continental United States. To date, more than a quarter of a million square miles of Amazon rainforest have been cleared - about 17.5 percent of it.

Average temperatures in rainforests stay relatively constant year-round, usually in the 75-80F range.

Mongabay lists the following countries as having the largest areas of rainforest:

1) Brazil
2) Congo (Democratic Republic)
3) Indonesia
4) Peru
5) Bolivia
6) Angola
7) Venezuela
8) Papua New Guinea
9) Mexico
10) India

Although most rainforests are found in tropical regions, they are sometimes also found in temperate-zone countries like Canada, the United States, and some of the former-USSR countries. Like tropical rainforests, these rainforests receive abundant, year-round rainfall and have a dense rainforest canopy, but they do not get the year-round consistent sunlight and warmth.

To be considered a rainforest, the forest must get at least 80 inches of rain per year. Most tropical rainforests get anywhere from 160 to 400 inches of rain a year. That's a lot compared to Grinning Planet's home state of Kentucky, which gets a moderate amount of rainfall - 0-45 inches per year.

In some tropical rainforests, sudden deluges of rain can cause streams to rise 10-20 feet in a couple of hours.

Rainforests create their own mini-climates - the water that evaporates from the forest forms clouds above the area and later falls as rain. Not all of the water stays local, of course, but in the Amazon rainforest, 50-80% of the water remains in the local ecosystem's water cycle. When rainforests are cut down, much of the moisture in the ecosystem is lost, leading to droughts and further devastation of species.

A tropical rainforest consists of four layers:

1) canopy -- the level where most of the tops of the trees are

2) emergent trees -- the few trees that manage to grow tall enough to poke up above the canopy

3) understory -- young trees and shrubs below the canopy, where growth is limited by lack of strong sunlight

4) forest floor -- fallen leaves and branches and dead trees; some animals and insects; dark and humid; lots of decomposition and recycling.

The top few inches of rainforest soil has most of the nutrients, so the roots of rainforest trees are not very deep. Most of the plant growth is in the emergent and canopy layers, where the sun is strongest. That means most of the available nutrients are there too, so it makes sense that most rainforest animals, including monkeys, birds, and tree frogs, live in the canopy.

Rainforests cover only 2% of the earth's surface, but they host more than half of the planet's plant and animal species - more species per acre than any other type of land-based ecosystem on the planet. The main reasons for this are:

1) the mega-doses of sunlight and rainfall in the rainforests make for lots of plant growth, which means lots of food for lots of animals; and

2) the structure of the canopy, which has a large volume with many varied niches for plants and animals to fill.

The sidebar to the right gives fun facts about five rainforest species. For more interesting facts about rainforest species, check out the general species pages from Rainforest Alliance or Rainforest Action Network; or these themed species pages from Mongabay, which have great pictures as well as basic information about rainforest species:

1) Mammals
2) Birds
3) Reptiles and Amphibians
4) Fish
5) Insects

Some animals that normally live outside the tropics - including hummingbirds, warblers and thousands of other North American birds - migrate to spend their winters in rainforests.

One poison-dart frog produces enough toxin to coat 50 to 100 poison darts. Leafcutter ants practice sustainable agriculture. They gather fragments from different plants and trees, thus ensuring that no species is harvested to the point of harm and limiting the ability of any one species to evolve to build up defenses against the leafcutters' operations.

The cocoa tree - whose pods are the source of chocolate - originated in the lowland rainforests near the Amazon River in South America but is now cultivated as far north as southern Mexico.

The coffee plant is another shade-lover. Unfortunately, in the 1970s, many coffee farmers began planting coffee bushes that produced higher yields and required no shade. This has resulted in the clearing of forested area for more full-sun coffee plantations.

Poinsettias originated in the tropical forests of southern Mexico and Central America but are now the number-one flowering potted plant in the US.

There are many now-common foods that originated from rainforest plants:

1) Beverages and snacks: coffee, cocoa, popcorn, cola, salsa

2) Nuts and legumes: cashews, peanuts, Brazil nuts

3) Fruit: bananas, pineapples, oranges, lemons, coconuts

4) Staples: rice

5) Vegetables: avocados, onions, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers

6) Spices: ginger, cinnamon, vanilla

We're sorry to report, however, that the vast world of plants and animals in the rainforest is suffering. An average of 137 rainforest species are driven to extinction every day. The number one cause is loss of habitat due to logging for lumber or tree clearing to provide land for farming and cattle ranching. Another problem is trade in rainforest species - sometimes legal, sometimes not - for exotic pets and plants; for fur, clothing, and shoes; even for research animals.

Pollution from industrial operations like mining and oil extraction also take a toll. Finally, climate change is emerging as a serious threat to rainforest animals; many biologists now believe climate change is second only habitat destruction in its capacity to wipe out species.

T women's jackets online he Amazon rainforest is sometimes called the "lungs of the planet" - it recycles enough carbon dioxide to produce more than 20% of the world's oxygen. Globally, rainforests also play a critical part in maintaining the earth's climate by helping regulate hydrologic cycles and by storing massive amounts of carbon that might otherwise be converted to heat-trapping carbon dioxide. Rainforests are estimated to be storing 610 billion tons of carbon.

Rainforests that are cleared by burning generate the most immediate release of CO2. But even plant debris that is left to rot causes a problem. In a healthy rainforest, dead leaves and trees are broken down into nutrients that are then quickly converted back to new plant growth, which uses carbon dioxide and locks it away where it can't add to the problem of greenhouse gas build-up. In a cleared forest, the nutrients and carbon dioxide are still produced graphic of logger during the breakdown of dead plant and animal matter, but there is no lush growth to use the CO2, so it floats up into the atmosphere to add to global warming.

While destruction of rainforests adds to the global warming problem, global warming itself hurts rainforests. As the earth's climate warms, it tends to dry out the rainforests and causes there to be less rainfall there. As the rainforest dries out, its ecosystems begin to degrade and the area becomes more susceptible to natural fire events, which cause further rainforest destruction. Roots that once held soil in place are no longer there, so when it does rain, the topsoil washes away, making reestablishment of rainforest areas difficult or impossible. Further, the eroded soil washes into streams and rivers, polluting the water and degrading aquatic habitat.

The clearing of rainforests is a big negative in earth's CO2 equation. Release of carbon dioxide from the carbonaceous materials in the soil of cleared, burned, and drought-devastated rainforest areas is one of a number of "feedback loops" that scientists think could lead to runaway climate change - that is, climate change that is driven by factors that we no longer can combat, no matter how much we try.

So, because climate change and rainforest health are, in fact, closely connected, implementing your own personal global warming solutions will help the rainforests.

Rainforests are amazing sources of products, both in terms of uniqueness and volume. But that can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the way production is managed. Some products, such as plants for medicines, Brazil nuts, and shade-grown coffee and cocoa, can be sustainably harvested from rainforests without damaging or destroying the forests. Unfortunately, such operations often are done in an unsustainable manner. Industrial operations such as gold mining and oil extraction are usually very destructive to rainforests.

Logging operations for tropical timber products are often done by clearcutting and have contributed to much of the destruction of tropical rainforests. Each year, more than thirty million tropical rainforest acres are destroyed.

Tropical rainforests have given us pharmaceuticals to treat or cure problems such as inflammation, fungal diseases, rheumatism, diabetes, muscle tension, malaria, heart conditions, skin diseases, arthritis, and glaucoma. The US National Cancer Institute has identified over 2,200 rainforest plants that are active against cancer cells. And those are just the ones they've looked at so far. Many, many more rainforest-based compounds remain to be evaluated for their healing properties. But that future bounty is put at risk by the continued loss of rainforest acreage and species.

Logging advocates are fond of saying that today the world actually has more acres of forest land than it did in the past, with the implication being that there is still plenty of forest for us to cut down, including rainforests and other old growth forests. But clearcutting a rainforest and then replanting trees does not leave us with the same original forest - not even close. While it is possible for a company to replant the trees, it is impossible for the company to recreate an ancient forest with its complex ecosystem of plants, animals, insects, and people that lived there before all the original trees were cut down. Only nature can create healthy rainforest ecosystems, and she takes thousands, sometimes millions, of years to do it.

Rainforests are fascinating, exotic places, full of ecological and mineral riches. But continued unsustainable exploitation of those riches is damaging the rainforests, and because of their connection to global climate change, these actions (among other things) endanger us all.

A Professional Is Not Always Needed To Do Home Repairs

With the right tools and enough knowledge, you can make just about any dream project become a reality. The following article is filled with everything you need to know to begin working on your home. If you put these tips to use, you will be able to have the home that you have always wanted.

Use natural materials for interior home improvement projects whenever the budget will possibly allow it. Real building supplies like wood and stone are much better than using synthetic ones. They last longer and are better looking too. The initial expense up-front for these materials may pay off over time because they will last longer.

To prevent air from escaping through your doors, buy draft excluders and sealant strips. Excluders go under the door and prevent hot air from going out and cool from coming in. Sealant strips can be used for this as well. You can get them at most hardware stores.

If you do find leaks beneath the sink or the faucet, avoid fixing it yourself. Just make sure you put a vessel large enough to collect the water underneath the leak and then call a plumber.

When you want to re-stain your deck, you have many choices available. You can find clear coat products as well as products that provide a rich colorful stain. In addition, you will find some options that are water-based and others that are oil-based. Each type of stain has its benefits and drawbacks, so carefully research your options to determine which is best for your deck.

If the home requires significant repair prior to your occupancy, make sure the major things are finished first. Small projects like completing your basement, altering paint colors, and renovating bathrooms can be done in pieces after you've mo fashion jackets ved in.

CFL bulbs are great for saving money and helping the environment. You do, however, need to know what to do if one breaks. Clear the immediate area of all people and pets, and allow air into the room. Pick up all the glass pieces; you can even use duct tape to get up the littlest fragments. Double-bag the broken pieces to dispose of and thoroughly vacuum the area. Be sure to empty your canister or bag directly after that.

If you are thinking about renovating your home, then you should consider how long your new appliances will last. A new refrigerator usually lasts twenty years of more, while a new washer or dryer lasts only about half that long. Make sure you pick the appliances wisely.

Are you disappointed with the renovations performed by your contractor? If so, don't be afraid to voice your opinion. Begin with your contractor and let him know the portions of the contract you believe he has violated. Go through the mail if you're not getting anywhere over the phone. From there, contact a consumer protection office to get more help.

Do bugs often keep you from enjoying the great outdoors? Consider installing a screened structure to your house. A screened area is a wonderful place to relax by yourself and feel fresh air or spend some enjoyable time together with friends and family. For added comfort you can install a ceiling fan.

Vinyl decks are a popular home improvement project. To extend the life of your vinyl deck and keep it looking its best, you must clean it well two times yearly. The best time of the year to sweep your vinyl deck clean is in the spring and the fall.

Don't stray from your neighborhood's character when making improvements to the exterior of your home. A house that is too unique may be thought of as an eyesore, and won't sell well later.

Are you searching for a low cost way to improve your home's look and value. You can create a nice landscape with some rock walls. The rocks aren't costly at all, as you can find them yourself for free! Look online to find instructions on how you can use rocks to form walkways and flower bed edgings.

Use tape over trim if you're going to paint the walls. No matter how careful you try to be, you will probably have a problem with paint dripping and running. Careful use of tape will protect your woodwork from unwanted paint drips. However, if you get running paint on the trim, then repainting it may be required.

If you don't have much experience with construction or home maintenance, you may need the information here to make your project successful.

Men's Suits for Fashionable Winters

Offices might not adjust their dress codes for the winter, but that doesn't mean that your own wardrobe has to be just as inflexible. Unchanging fashion etiquette does not call for you to wear the same suits you did for summer, which are likely to be, in terms of style and practicality, unsuitable for the colder seasons. Here's how to warm up to your suits in a whole new way to get you looking sharp even during those cold snaps.

Have Some Heft
Cotton is an ideal fabric for most other months of the year and wool is cool for temperate times. When the mercury really starts falling, though, you'll want to get suits (and other pieces) that have more substance and thickness to them for those colder days.

Winter suits are best done in tweed, that trusty staple fabric of men's fashion from across the Atlantic. More cold-ready than cotton and outstanding than plain old wool, tweed makes even the most tired and typical style of suit seem more dapper than usual. The slim gray suit in tweed - worn with strategic pops of color on the shirt and socks - is one of this winter season's most coveted trends.

Even neckties seem to be getting a heft upgrades these days. Now that you probably own at least one knit tie to give your wardrobe some non-silk texture, you may want to play around with the idea of wool ties. Fabrics used in suits are now being used for a wider range of men's apparel - including neckties. A tie in these heavier textiles are appropriate for the harsh winter weather, especially in dark colors and strong prints like plaid.

Love Some Layers

Yes, thick suit jackets do give you a fair amount of insulation - if you consider them in a vacuum. Once you think about that subzero temperature outside, however, you'll think twice about wearing just a shirt and tie with your suit. Additio women's coats nal layers aren't just for heating you up; they're also a chance to insert an extra style statement into every outfit.

Slim, sleek sweaters, none of that chumpy, chunky variety for layering with suits, are key style pieces to have this winter. Layer a solid or subtly patterned one over the barest of shirt and tie combinations and you'll have yourself some instant color and life in your ensemble. Remember, though, to keep your v-neck sweater slim-fitted and distinct from all the rest of your clothes, particularly the suit.

On the other side of the suit jacket, you'll also want to consider picking up a topcoat or pea coat for facing the bitter cold. Solids are your best bet - patterned coats are for more advanced fashion adopters, with navy, gray and black at the front line. As with sweaters, stick to a color that's close yet distinguishable from that of your suit.

Consider Some Color
With the dreary gray outside and the uniform dark colors of your suit and underpinnings, it's not a far off chance for your outfit to become boring. Men's fashion relies a lot on contrast, and adding even a little bit of color to your outfit gives you just that.

As your suit, necktie, sweater and outerwear are most likely in dark, heavy colors, shirts in bright and light shades should create some levity in your look. Pastels that aren't too light - mint greens and light yellows, for example - should pop quite nicely against your winter suiting backdrop. Socks and pocket squares make good substitutes for the necktie when it comes to contributing small and subtle pockets of color here and there.

Your shoes could also use a color update. Instead of the black lace-ups you likely wear to work every day, pick up a pair in caramel or burnished brown leather. They make a refreshing change from noir, without straying from the bounds of formalness at the same time. Laced up over a pair of vibrant socks in a fun color, brown shoes are the kind of accessories that get noticed at the office and make a definite sartorial impression.

The History of Fake Porcelain Factories

There were many small factories, which did not, got mentioned in many of the historical evidences that were discovered from different parts of England. But these small factories contributed much to the development and spread of the porcelain wares from the country. Here we are going to see about those small factories of porcelain works.

Lowestoft
A small factory was started in this Suffolk town in 1757, and continued in operation until 1802. In the past it received attention out of all proportion to the merit of its productions, and through a mistake in a book published in 1863 a very large amount of Chinese hard-paste porcelain was accredited to it. In spite of the fact that this has been proved a fallacy; much Chinese ware of the once-disputed type is still called 'Lowestoft'; not only in England, but also in America.

Lowestoft ware is similar to that of Bow, and the factory is said to have been started by a man who smuggled himself into the Bow works and learned the secrets of their manufacture. This story may or may not be true, but the two porcelains are very alike in appearance and both contain bone ash. Much domestic ware painted in under glaze blue was made at Lowestoft, and is indistinguishable from that made at the London factory. Many of the pieces were decorated in colors, and a few figures are claimed to have been made.

One feature of the productions during forty-five years is the large number of commemorative pieces that were made. They range from small tablets honoring a birth or death, to sets of tankards with the name of the alehouse for which they were made. They are interesting; much sought after and rare, many having gone to museums.

Plymouth
In 1768 William Cookworthy, a Plymouth chemist, took out a patent for the making of true hard-paste porcelain using ingredients he had found in Cornwall. He opened a factory at Plymouth in that year, and two years later transferred it to Bristol where Richard Champion became manager until he bought the concern in 1773.

The earlier porcelain made at Plymouth is often smoke-stained and misshapen, and the under glaze blue sometimes used is more like a blue-black. After the move to Bristol many of the same faults appear, but less frequently, and the majority of the pieces stand comparison with other wares of the period.

Many of the shapes of tablewares are from Sevres models, but some of the figures are original in design and their painting is usually very accomplished. Champion made a number of highly decorative services at Bristol for presentation to his friends, and another feature of the factory was some small biscuit plaques carefully modeled with flowers and Other ornament in relief round a portrait bust, or a coat-of-arms. The thirty or so recorded plaques of this description include five with portraits of Benjamin Franklin, and one with George Washington.

In 1781, the patent was sold to a group of Staffordshire potters who opened a factory called New Hall at Longport, Staffordshire. The mark at Plymouth was the alchemists' sign for tin, like a figure four, in red; and at Bristol an 'X' in blue.

Some of the small factories that came into existence made their own styles of porcelain but some of them fake the designs and styles of the more popular ones. The wares made at the Suffolk town is still called 'Lowestoft', and the mark at Plymouth was the alchemists sign for tin, like a figure four, in red women's jackets and in Bristol it is marked an 'X' in blue.

Fleur De lis Bookends Emblematic of History

The Fleur de lis is symbolic for many reasons. Most often translated as flower of the lily, this historic symbol has been associated with European royalty, in particular the French monarchies.

Throughout history, the fleur de lis has become almost ubiquitous in its use as a symbol representing royalty, religion and military significance. It is no wonder that decorative bookends and other elements of interior design have made use of this historic emblem.

Though there is a great deal of historic disagreement, the fleur de lis is believed to have originated during medieval times. Representations of the symbol have been throughout Europe. Relics from as far east as Mesopotamia, what is now modern day Iraq, featured some derivation of the fleur de lis. From Celtic coins to Asian clothing, the symbol has developed a worldwide significance. The symbol can be found in relics of several Middle Eastern works of art.

Heraldic and royal significance aside, the fleur de lis developed various other meanings. The Christian religions saw the symbol as representative of several things. Not the least of these was as a symbol of the cross and crucifixion. Another significant Christian interpretation involved the Holy Trinity. The prominent petals of the flower were said to be representative of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Chivalry, faith and wisdom were some of the more secular characteristics associated with this historic symbol.

The reinvention of medieval symbols by the growing Christian religions was not limited to the fleur de li. The well known Celtic cross or Cross of Iona predates Christianity by hundreds of years, yet Christians immediately appropriated the symbol as their own. As with the fleur de li, the Celtic cross was seen as symbol of the Latin cross or Crux immisa. The Holy Trinity and symbols of the crucifixion play an important role in what was to become the Roman Catholic Church.

Gothic symbols included the quatrefoil, a symmetrical four sided figure. The four sides of the quatrefoil were thought to have several meanings tied to the Matthew, Mark Luke and John other known as the four evangelists. The fleur de li is yet another example of three and four sided figures appropriated by the Catholic Church. The flower of the lily has been interpreted to stand for female virtues such as purity and chastity. These same virtues have always been closely associated with the Virgin Mary, another very important icon of the Catholic faith.

King Louis VII was thought to be the first French monarch to adopt the fleur de li, though this remains a matter of great debate among some h women's jackets istorians. Though the symbol was never officially adopted by France, it has endured as being closely associated with the French. English kings, most notably King Edward, adopted the symbol in the thirteen hundreds. Scottish King James I included the fleur de li in his coat of arms. Early Spanish and Italian royalty made of the symbol as well including the Spanish House of Bourbon.

Modern use of the symbol includes use in many logos, artwork and as a military designation. Many state flags in the United States feature some form of the fleur de li. The provincial flag of Quebec, Canada, the Fleurdelise, makes prominent use of the symbol.

Bookends that feature the fleur de li are very popular. The enormously historic significance of the simple has been replaced by an admiration for its simplicity of design. Fleur de li bookends can be found in a wide variety of materials, from stone, marble and clay. Bronze, pewter and similar metals are widely used to create bookends that, though unknown to many people, have a deep and rich history.

Causes Of Dog Health Problems Bloody Stool Issues

Melena is the number one cause of dog health problems bloody stool issues. Melena and hematochezia cause the dog to have bloody stool. Melena is blood that the dog digested, and looks dark in color. Hematochezia is considered fresh blood in the stool and is considered minor compared to melena. Many health reasons result in a bloody stool and most tests by a veterinarian will confirm the problem.

This health problem causes a lack of energy and sometimes incontinence, as accidents happen due to the inability to move outdoors quickly. Women's Fashion - Fashion Rules to Live By

8 Rules to follow to ensure you do not make common fashion mistakes. These rules help you look your best and give the best first impression.

1. Buy clothes that fit-This is the number one most important rule to follow. Many women that lack confidence buy oversized clothing thinking that it will hide their imperfections. Unfortunately, the resulting effect is sloppiness and a lack of femininity.

On the other end of the spectrum there are women that buy clothes with the plans to lose weight but never do. Women wearing unflatteringly tight clothes resemble overinflated Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons that could pop at any moment.

2. Cover up-Don't show everything to everyone. Showing too much cleavage or wearing too short of skirts may give the distinct impression that you are easy or even selling something. In everyday situations, have some class and practice some modesty.

3. Choose correct under garments-It is so important to wear the right underwear. One of the worst but most common mistakes made women is showing panty lines when wearing well fitted pants or skirts. T women's jackets his can be avoided by wearing a thong or by choosing clothing that is less tight.

The same applies to bras. Choose bras that fit properly so that people cannot see bra lines or bulging breasts under your clothing. Also, if you're wearing a light-colored shirt, do not wear a black or bright colored bra that can be easily seen through the fabric.

With low riding pants being so popular, it is very common to see a woman's underwear when a woman sits down or bends over. Although common, this is a fashion no-no. Find the correct underwear that can stay hidden during all movement. A general rule to remember about underwear is that it should not be seen while wearing clothing. Its name explains it all: it is meant to be worn under garments.

4. Iron your clothes-It is always a hassle but if your clothes are wrinkled, iron them. Wrinkled clothes give the impression of sloppiness and a general disregard for your appearance. If you really hate ironing avoid buying linen clothes or any fabric that is prone to wrinkling.

5. Dress your age-It is hard to admit your age sometimes, but unfortunately, it is also difficult to hide it. Don't try to hide your age by wearing youthful revealing clothing. This doesn't mean you have to wear grandma panties and cardigans, but rather, just choose clothing that promotes respect and flatters your aging body.

6. Match your shoes with outfit-A general rule is that the color of your shoes should match your outfit or at least the style should match. For example, if you are wearing a nice dress do not wear your casual flip flops with it.

7. Accessorize to compliment-Avoid loud and obnoxious jewelry and accessories that distract from your clothing. Your accessories are meant to compliment your entire outfit, not demand attention to itself.

8. Don't wear too many colors-Combining too many colors in one outfit can look messy and be distracting. As a general rule, only mix two to three colors.

Because first impressions are often gathered by appearance, clothing explains who you are and what you are about. Make sure your clothing reflects your true self rather than detracting from it by following these simple rules. If followed, these women's fashion rules can ensure that your dress will demand respect and at the same time make you attractive.

Kitchen Cabinets - Painting Adds Years To Their Life

So your kitchen cabinets are the most dreadful sight in the entire neighborhood. Your even embarrassed to have the neighbor kids over, let alone their parents. It's big bucks to have them replaced with new, and that vile cleaning job you tried on them just didn't do the trick. While there's one other thing you can try before breaking the bank to buy new ones. A new coat of good quality paint or varnish may just do the trick. Even replacing the hardware with something more to your liking can make an amazing improvement. That's what we did a few years ago, and it extended the life of our cabinets another four or five years. While we eventually did end up replacing all the cabinets, we were able to put it off until our bank account was a little more up to the challenge. Now, here's a few things to keep in mind if you decide to tackle a kitchen cabinet paint job.

First thing, you will need to do is to remove all the cabinet doors and hardware. You'll obviously want to do this, if your replacing all the hardware, but even if your not it's a good idea to get a mor women's jackets e professional paint job. Depending on the size of your kitchen you may need to use another room in the house to put all the doors. Preferably some place you can work in, so everything (cabinets and doors) can be painted in one go. Be sure to have plenty of drop cloths handy. Wipe down any surface to be painted with TSP. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions as this stuff can be somewhat caustic. Some people prefer to do a light sanding of all painted surfaces at this point. Depending on the condition of your cabinets this may or not be necessary. If they are a little beaten up, then this may even out the surfaces a bit before painting. In our case no sanding was required, and everything looked just fine in the end.

The paint we used was a white melamine paint. It's designed specifically for this type of job. Just talk to your local paint supplier, and they can point you in the right direction. If your actually varnishing the cabinets, then using a high quality, oil based polyurethane would be a good choice. Again, talk the people at your local paint store, tell them what your doing, and they can make some suggestions. Even bringing in one of the smaller cabinet doors may give the sales person a better idea of what your up to. Once everything not being painted is covered or taped, it's time to start painting. Always use the best quality brush or roller you can afford. It's still cheaper than hiring a professional, and the finished job will look just as good.

Once everything is painted or varnished, and had time to dry, it's time to put everything back together. Now all that's left to do, is sit back and enjoy the view of your new kitchen cabinets. It'll give you something to do while your waiting for your bank account to build up for that big kitchenremodeling job a few years from now.

History of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever breed was developed in the mid-1800's in England by dog breeders trying to develop the ideal gun dog. The English Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1903 and the first Labrador Retriever was registered with the AKC in the United States in 1917. They have now become the most popular dog breed in the United States.

The term "Labrador" is actually a bit of a misnomer. The dogs originated from the St. John's area of Newfoundland and were first referred to (incorrectly) as Labrador dogs by geographically misinformed English people. When the first fisherman arrived in Newfoundland, there were probably no native dogs. They most likely imported dogs from English breeds. Various breeds have been suggested as possible sources for the St. John's dogs, including St. Hubert's hound from France, water dogs from Portugal, and old European pointer dogs.

These dogs were eventually developed into two distinct lines - a smaller dog and a larger dog. The smaller dog, used mostly in the fishing boats, was known as the Lesser St. John's dogs, or the Lesser Newfoundland. There is a lot of confusion over the actual names of the dogs, as Newfoundland and St. John's dogs were often used interchangeably for both the smaller and large version of the dogs. These dogs were used by the fisherman mainly for retrieving fish, nets, corks, and fishing lines. There are often stories of the dogs rescuing fisherman themselves!

The dogs were developed to have water repellent coat that was short enough that it would not bring a large amount of water back in the boat. They were also known to have high endurance as the fishing trips often lasted for days at a time. In the late 1800's, Charles Eley wrote the following in his book, History of Retrievers: "The first Labrador to reach England swam ashore from vessels which brought cod from Newfoundland...It was claimed for them that their maritime existence...had resulted in webbed feet, a coat impervious to water like that of an otter, and a short, thick 'swordlike' tail, with which to steer safely their stoutly made frames amid the breakers of the ocean.

Other early descriptions exist, including this by the explorer W.E. Comack: The dogs are admirably trained as retrievers in fowling, and are otherwise useful.....The smooth or short haired dog is preferred because in frosty weather the long haired kind become encumbered with ice on coming out of the water.

Colonel Peter Hawker wrote: [The Labrador Retriever is] by far the best for any kind of shooting. He is generally black and no bigger than a Pointer, very fine in legs, with short, smooth hair and does not carry his tail so much cu women's jackets rled as the other; is extremely quick, running, swimming and fighting...

These St. John dogs were imported back into England from the early 1800's until 1885. In 1885, the Newfoundland Sheep Act and Britian's Quarantine Act ceased further importation of the dogs. During the period of importation, a few kennels regularly imported the St. John's dogs, including those of Buccleugh and Malmesbury.

The third Earl of Malmesbury (1807-1889) wrote a letter in 1887 calling the them "labrador dogs" and stating that the "real breed" may be known by having a "close coat which turns the water off like oil, above all, a tail like an otter." The Buccleugh line was developed at about the same time by the fifth Duke of Buccleugh (1806-1884) and some of his friends. The Buccleugh line almost disappeared but was revitalized in 1882 when the third Earl of Malmesbury gave the sixth Duke of Buccleugh several of his dogs from the Malmesbury line.

The two separate kennels bred separately for almost 50 years but produced dogs that were very similar. Most modern Labradors are very closely related to these St. John's dogs. Buccleugh's Avon is considered the founder of all Labrador Retrievers.

Colonel Peter Hawker wrote the first written reference to the breed in his 1814 "Instructions to Young Sportsment," and Edwin Lanseer created the first painting of the Labrador in 1823. The first photograph of the dog was in 1856 and by 1870 the name Labrador Retriever was becoming common in England. The first yellow lab was born in 1899 and the breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1903. The American Kennel Club (AKC) soon followed suit in 1917.
In England, the Labrador gained much popularity in the early 1900's and began performing very well in field trials. There were also a number of "dual champion" retrievers in England at this time. Labrador Retrievers were imported into America during the first World War, and they enjoyed a huge popularity surge after World War II. In 1991, the Labrador Retriever took over as the most registered breed in the AKC and has held that position for the last 18 years. Over 150,000 Labradors were registered with the AKC in 2002.

Yellow Labrador Retrievers

Although subtype colors were noticed in the St. John's dogs as early as 1807, the first registered yellow Labrador was Ben of Hyde, born in 1899. The early yellow labs were more of a dark yellow, or butterscotch color. They were actually referred to as "golden" for a short time. Over the 19th century, a preference for the lighter shades of yellow developed and more breedings were done to develop this color. The interest in the darker shades of gold and fox red were reignited in the 1980's.

Chocolate Labrador Retrievers

The chocolate color was recognized as a a distinct shade in the 1900's. Jack Vanderwyk has a database (on LabradorNet database) that traces the origin of all chocolate labs back into the 1800's. There was also a certain degree of interbreeding with Chesapeakes and Flatcoats in the 1900's.

Oldest Ever Australian Cattle Dog

The oldest dog on record was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey. Bluey lived to be almost 30 years old. That figure is in human years.Dogs mature more rapidly than humans. According to dog age experts, a one-year-old dog is really about age 15 in human equivalent years. The average life expectancy of The Australian Cattle Dog is about 12-15 years.

Bluey was exceptional in that he outlived all the online life expectancy calculations. It may have been his diet or his genetics. The life expectancy of dogs increase dramatically because of better diets, better health care, and better living conditions.

Bluey was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months. The official AKC breed name for Bluey is "Australian Cattle Dog". Sometimes these
dogs are called "heelers" because they were developed in Australia for controlling cattle. The dogs were trained to herd cattle by nipping and biting at their heels.

Ancestors:

Bluey's ancestors are Collies, Dalmatians, and the native Australian Dingo.Bluey was heavier and more muscular than his ancestor the Border Collie.
The ACD have been working on Australian ranches since early in this century.Bred to withstand extreme temperatures and the resourcefulness to forage to
feed itself like a wild dog made the ACD a very independent pet.

Physical Characteristics:

The coat is smooth with a double coat that it is resistant to the elements. The breed sheds constantly and requires regular brushing.
Bluey and his breed are:

* Sturdy and compact herding dogs
* Well-developed muscles
* Powerful, strong and agile

Size & Height:

The women's jackets breed is medium in size
* Weighs around 32-35 pounds
* Height of 17-20 inches.

Personality:

Bluey and his breed are very good with the family children. This breed has a natural protective instinct. They are very loyal dogs and are easy to train. These dogs need to attend dog obedience classes. As a result of their dog obedience classes, they will be absolutely obedient companions.

The ACD tends to show some aggressive tendencies toward noisy and strange children that tend to tease the animal. These dogs will nip at the heels of people
and children because of their inherent "heeler" traits. They may be suspicious of individuals as well as other dogs.

This breed needs regular exercise. A daily walk will keep the dog satisfied. This breed is very easy to train. The dog wants to stay busy so engage the dog in stimulating activities like "fetch" or the frisbee.

Give the Australian Cattle Dog a toy and he will play with the toy until the toy is totally destroyed. They will run and fetch sticks, balls and even cans. The breed is fun and playful and make excellent companions for children.
Physical Accommodations:

* Requires a large open yard.
* Barks at any change in environment
* Needs attention.

When an Australian Cattle Dog is bored they tend to become destructive. The dog will destroy any object left in his area. The ACD is a very active dog and wants to run and jump in open areas.

Health Problems:
Genetic health problems may include the following:

* Deafness
* Progressive retinal atrophy (causes blindness)
* Hip dysplasia,
* Temperament abnormalities.
* Deficit of attention disorders

Few ACD owners complain of loneliness or lack of companionship with this breed. The ACD wants love and attention and will give these back ten fold. Bluey is no longer with us but the ACD breed , Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most popular dogs in the United States and in the UK.

The Briard Dog Breed And Some Quality Information You Must Know

The Briard is a large, powerful dog with the shaggy dog look. She makes a good watch dog and a good guard dog. She loves her human family and is intelligent and fairly easy to train. She needs quite a bit of grooming and attention to keep her coat healthy and looking good.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male briard is 24 to 27 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 75 to 90 pounds. The female ranges from 22 to 25 inches to the withers and 75 to 85 pounds.

Special Health Considerations

Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Briard is no exception. Keep on the look out for canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), progressive retinal atrophy (inherited disease of the retina that can cause vision loss and blindness), cataracts, stomach torsion and bloat (Gastric Dilation-Volvulus, the second leading killer of dogs, can kill within the hour, this space is too limited for a complete explanation but you should read up on this). Feeding more then once a day and avoiding exercise right after meals may help guard against bloat. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.

She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.

Grooming

The Briard has a coarse, dry and hard coat in long, waving locks. She needs extensive grooming to look good and avoid mats. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and also help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with your pet. Her pads of her feet need excess hair removed.

Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect women's jackets an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.

Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her nails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

Life Span

The Briard can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.

History

The Briard is from France and descended from some of the oldest dogs. It is believed that Emperor Charlemagne had them some 1200 years ago. Thomas Jefferson may have been the original importer of the Briard to America. She was first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1928.

Puli Essential Dog Breed Facts And Important Information

When one first sees the Puli, the question is always asked "How on earth do you give this dog a bath?" The answer is, obviously, "It takes a LONG time!"

The Hungarian Puli develops a "corded" coat as it ages. The coat tends to naturally gather itself together in ringlets which are very tightly curls and gnarled together into long cords. A mature coat takes a good 10 to 12 years to reach its full glory for the Show Ring, as a consequence there are Pulik (the plural of Puli) who are still in the prime of their show career at an age when most dogs are being shown in Veteran's Class.

Among the other breeds which have a similar coat one finds the Komondor and years ago the Poodle. The tight cords protect the breed from weather and harsh elements. The preferred color is black, however there can be white, rust colored and various shades in between. The Puli was originally bred in Hungary as a herding dog and those with a black coat could be more easily seen by shepherds and thus be distinguished from the sheep.

Pulik are nimble on their feet and smaller than they appear, usually standing less than 20 inches at the shoulder. Like most herding breeds, they are built so they can move quite nimbly, nipping at the heels of the sheep to keep them grouped together. They are even known to run upon the backs of a tightly bunched flock of sheep.

This is not a common breed. Most folks who own Pulik do keep the short coat if they are not women's jackets being shown, since a corded coat is difficult to care for and develops a strong smell if not kept clean. Which brings us to the question, "How are they bathed?" Usually the entire dog is immersed in a large tub filled with room temperature water and a bit of shampoo, the individual cords are squeezed by hand and the skin is gently massaged.

Care must be taken not to damage the cording or the individual cords will become tangled together and the show look requires that the long cords hang naturally and separately from each other. Once the shampoo has been squeezed through the coat, the dog is immersed in several tubs of tepid clear water as a rinse and also sprayed thoroughly and finally, toweled dry with the same squeezing process. A blow dryer can then be used, provided it is not so powerful that it "frizzes" the coat. The entire process usually takes a full day. Since the cords are long and reach to the ground, it is important to keep the dog from running in underbrush and that sort of thing.

One would question why this dog with this kind of coat can be running with sheep, but the fact is that this coat when it is in a natural state completely protects the dog from thorns and brambles. The thick wooly cords are also natural weather barriers to rain and snow, so that the body of the Puli is well protected from the elements of harsh weather. Furthermore a would-be predator can not sink its teeth into the flesh of this nimble dog and can only get a mouthful of hair. Thus the Pulik are naturally quite self sufficient out in the flock, needing little in the way of human care.

Their job requires a certain independence and they are not necessarily in need of a lot of human companionship. Pulik should not exhibit shyness or nervousness , usually are wary of strangers and should not be aggressive. They are energetic and require a job of some sort or plenty of exercise or the owner of a Puli will find that it is getting into all sorts of things, out of boredom.
